Anthony Joshua is looking to do some damage when he defends his heavyweight titles against Andy Ruiz at Madison Square Garden on June 1.
Ruiz, who will be bidding to become Mexico’s first heavyweight world champion, replaces Joshua’s scheduled opponent Jarrell Miller, who was barred from fighting after failing drugs tests.
Ruiz, 29-years-old, cited Mexican great Julio Cesar Chavez, a world champion in several lighter classes, and former heavyweight world champions Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis.
Ruiz believes Joshua’s style is robotic and he can take full advantage of that.
“I think being so tall he fights like a big robot. I think with my style, my speed, my movement, I don’t think he’s fought anybody like me. ‘It’s going to be a whole different ball game. I’m going to bring the pressure, the speed, and the combinations to him,” Ruiz said.
But Joshua was a bit annoyed when he heard Ruiz was already taking some verbal jabs, and promised to batter him if he continues.
“Wow, he’s already started his trash talk?” Joshua retorted when posed with the question from Boxing Social.
“You don’t want to talk because this robot… I will whoop him. I thought he was a cool guy so I just go in there and beat him up slowly but if he talks reckless I will batter him. I’ll show him what this robot can do.
“It’s up to him how he wants to approach the fight. If he wants to talk reckless then he’ll be in for a proper scrap.”
Ruiz has won 32 of his 33 professional bouts, with his only defeat coming in a world title challenge against New Zealand’s Joseph Parker.
Joshua, 29, who has won all of his 22 fights, will be fighting in the United States for the first time and defending his WBA, IBF, IBO, WBO belts.
