A political party, Hope Democratic Party (HDP), has filed a motion seeking an order of the presidential election tribunal restraining President Muhammadu Buhari from presenting himself to be sworn-in on May 29th, 2019. The party is also seeking an order restraining the Chief Justice of Nigeria from swearing-in, administering the oath of office and oath of allegiance to the president on May 29th, 2019. In a motion on notice made available to journalists on Tuesday, Hope Democratic Party filed the motion on six grounds pursuant to section one subsection two of the 1999 constitution as amended and under the jurisdiction of the tribunal. Some of the grounds of the application is that there is a pending petition challenging the election and return of President Buhari as the winner of the February 23 presidential election. Leah Sharibu, only schoolgirl remaining in Boko Haram captivity after the Dapchi kidnappings, turns sixteen today. Leah was held back for refusing to convert to Islam after the Nigerian government negotiated and paid ransom for the release of the other school girls. Her whereabouts remain unknown despite promises by the federal government to get her released. On February 19, 2018, Boko Haram terrorist stormed the Government Girls Science and Technical College, Dapchi and carted away 110 school girls. On 21 March 2018 after negotiating with terrorists, the Nigerian government announced the release of all but one of the kidnapped school girls; Leah was held back and not negotiated for on account of her faith. A young Nigerian poet has committed suicide hours after he took to Facebook to write a suicide post that no one paid attention to.   Chukwuemeka Akachi was suffering depression and spoke about it on a Facebook post hours before he took his life. Sadly, the post barely got any reaction as people thought he was simply seeking attention.   He wrote on Sunday, May 12: “My mental health has been on life support for a while now. Thanks to those who call. Text. Visit. Speak to me. May we always remember. May we never forget. You may have added a few hours, months or days to my time here. But you know life support is expensive right? Thanks for trying. Amen.”

World leaders have not been invited for the May 29, 2019 inauguration of President Muhammadu Buhari for a second term in office, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed has disclosed. He told State House correspondents in Abuja on Monday that government has decided to make the ceremony a low key affair. Mohammed stated that the decision was taken at the Federal Executive Council (FEC). He, however, said that the world leaders are expected to grace the celebration of Democracy Day on June 12, 2019. In line with this, he said, invitations have been sent to all world leaders to attend the ceremonies marking the observance of the Democracy Day on June 12. He added: “Since the first observance of June 12 as Democracy Day falls into an election year, and as a measure to sustain June 12 as Democracy Day, the celebration of the inauguration and the advancement of democracy in the country will now take place on June 12.” He added that the country can ill-afford two major ce

The Federal Government in collaboration with the World Bank on Monday commenced the National Conditional Cash Transfer Programme in Osun State aimed at reducing poverty and banishing hunger among citizens. No fewer than 415,677 households stands to benefit from the programme with about 9,084 beneficiaries from Osun State. These disclosures were made by the national coordinator, National Cash Transfer Office, Mr Shittu Sanni at a two-day training workshop for the facilitators of the 8th batch enrolment of conditional cash transfer to beneficiaries. He explained that the programme was packaged to empower beneficiaries through training on saving and group mobilization, life long and micro business development skills. Sanni noted that the Federal government organized the programme to help the poor people to graduate from poverty within three years, adding that “all the beneficiaries were being selected through a Community Based Targeting (CBT) process which involves the community memb

King Mswati III of Swaziland has declared in Mbabane Swaziland that men will from June 2019 be required to marry at least two or more wives or be jailed if they fail to do so. The king, who has 15 wives and 25 children,While his father and predecessor has more than 70 wives and 150+ children revealed that Swaziland is facing a very serious problem as there are more women than men in his country. Men from Swaziland are therefore required and expected to take more wives so that every woman gets a husband. The country which is known to be full of virgins, is also said to have more women than men. In a statement, king Mswati called for all men in the country to marry at least five wives and the government assured the men that it would pay for the marriage ceremonies and buy houses for them. King Mswati warned that any man or woman who opposes the decision “will face a life sentence”.
